****Editorial:****

I invited myself to the Senior Citizens lunch-date last week held in one of our finest hotels. To do this, one only needs to discover that the town hall has its annual free treat for the over-65s and to know to drop by the secretary’s office in due time to pick up a ticket.

All rather fun, I’d not been before.

I’ve become a trifle deaf – it comes with age I suppose. At least I still have my hair and teeth, or at least, most of them anyway. Although it might go in some way towards explaining why nothing in the giant array of serve-yourself food was crunchy.

The queue outside was designed to be barged, so we all did – creating a tight-to-fit blockage at the door into the dining hall. Once past the ticket-inspector, I joined the noisy throng looking for somewhere to sit.

The first person I saw was Doña Beatriz, who had kindly mentioned me during her speech as *la pregonera* at the opening of the village fiesta back in August. I thanked her for her kind words. We foreigners often tend to get overlooked.

Then casting about, I suddenly heard my name hooted across the room, so found my way to an empty chair next to a British friend, who like me, is an old-timer here in our community.

Janie once worked as an airhostess for a zeppelin, so I was pleased to see her, and indeed hear her voice rise above the herd.

The Spanish are a noisy race, and their refectories are designed to echo appealingly to encourage the cacophony – hard walls, lots of massive glassed windows and a tiled floor. According to my friend Colin, who writes a daily [blog from Galicia](https://thoughtsfromgalicia.com/2026/10/08/8-october-2026/), a ‘noisy bar’ is a tautology in Spain, he says, since there’s no other kind. Apparently, when we are young, our hearing can distinguish what we want over the roar from what we don’t – known perhaps as ‘the cocktail party effect’. Sadly, this useful skill diminishes as one gets older.

Thus, many of us ancients were sufferers of hearing-loss. Two hundred or so pensioners bellowing across the tables at each other. Even my friend from the airship, who had once long ago been trained to project her voice across forty metres of companionway, was obliged to give it her all as she asked me politely for the salt.

We went to fill our plates, after all, a free meal at a buffet means ‘pile them high’. Three times to the trough and back. I bumped into the mayor on the second visit (he was the only person there who was underage) and thanked him for the lunch. One of the racier old girls filling her plate next to me asked who he was: ‘he’s a handsome looking cove’ I think was what she said.

A merry session, a hearty scoff and a glass of wine (one must be careful these days) and so I took my leave, slightly nonplussed as to what was the point of this luncheon. There were no speeches or prize-giving or a raffle for a brand-new coffee-machine from the local white-goods emporium or maybe a colourful painting of our village from the schoolchildren.

I went outside – ah bliss! So quiet I could hear a pin drop.

****Housing:****

From ****Sur in English**** [here](https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/over-three-quarters-spaniards-call-for-state-20261008174900-nt.html): ‘Over three quarters of Spaniards call for state intervention in housing market, *CIS poll* reveals. First housing survey by public research body in eight years came as Puerta del Sol protest camp entered second week following eviction outrage’.

‘Spain's PM approves again the two housing decrees. New texts restore the main measures but introduce changes to overcome the *Congreso*'s rejection and allow Parliament to approve them after its dissolution’. ****Sur in English**** [has](https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/sanchez-once-again-20261006000500-nt.html): ‘Changes to rent increases’; ‘*Casa 47* (the state-owned housing company) to take over thousands of Social Security properties’; ‘Protection against evictions and restrictions on major investors’; ‘Restrictions on short-term rentals, room-by-room lets and tourist flats’ and ‘Tax deductions, ten thousand million in loans and guarantees for housing supply’.

From ****Redacción Médica**** [here](https://www.redaccionmedica.com/politica/20261005/pedro-sanchez-convoca-elecciones-para-el-de-noviembre-pone-foco-en-la-inversion-sanidad/354738_0.html): ‘Sánchez highlighted the boost his government has given to public services: "I would like to point out that we have transferred more resources than ever to regional governments so they could invest in healthcare and education and build housing—yet they bought penthouses and privatized hospitals"’, he said regretfully.

‘The housing crisis is set to be a central issue in the upcoming election campaign, a contest in which the PSOE and alternative left-wing forces could gain an advantage. The *Centre for Sociological Research*(CIS) has published its *2026 Housing Barometer*, and the data brings good news for Pedro Sánchez: the study shows majority support for the Government's housing policy, as well as for the decree approved this past Tuesday week. According to the *CIS*, 80% of the Spanish population believes that housing should be prioritized as a right rather than merely as a financial asset…’ ****Público**** reporting [here](https://www.publico.es/economia/vivienda/cis-revela-amplio-consenso-sobre-vivienda-80-defiende-derecho-76-pide-intervenir-mercado.html).

****Sur in English**** (and no doubt its conservative owner *Diario Sur*) [says](https://www.surinenglish.com/spain/small-landlords-responding-20261013000500-nt.html) ‘Spain's small landlords withdraw thousands of properties from traditional rental market over government decrees. Estate agents report plunge in long-term rental stock as property owners switch to sales, seasonal lets, or hold contracts ahead of general election’. *Seems fair. They can either keep them empty (and pay tax on them) or sell them presumably in a bear* *market.*

‘Forget the Costa del Sol! Spain’s best retirement towns revealed – with low living costs and relaxed lifestyle’. ****The Daily Mail**** has a rather silly article on this – with some towns picked apparently at random (plus Sitges, which is horrifically expensive) [here](https://www.dailymail.com/travel/article-16204565/best-retirement-towns-spain-expat.html).

The new system aims to simplify fingerprinting appointments for foreign nationals’.

****Seniors:****

Nearly 9.5 million pensioners will head into the general election on November 29 after receiving their Christmas bonus payment, which is scheduled for the last week of the month. The overlap of these two events places pensions at the heart of the political debate during the election campaign. ‘According to released figures, the bonus payment will be made on November 25—just four days before the election. However, the day the funds become available may vary depending on the specific bank’ (*Facebook* [item](https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1419631303672614&id=100068772721876&post_id=100068772721876_1419631303672614&rdid=u1rPmHYkxkuQi2yb)).

The organization identifies the Spanish economy as the most dynamic among developed nations this year, having raised its previous *GDP* projection by 0.4 percentage points to 2.5%—more than double the forecast for the Eurozone as a whole’.

From ****The Olive Press**** [here](https://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2026/10/09/eu-backs-spains-bizum-payment-app-to-rival-visa-and-mastercard/): ‘Brussels backs Spain’s *Bizum* to create physical cards in battle to break US monopoly over instant payments’.

Come what may, the [2027 increase in pensions](https://www.elmundo.es/economia/2026/10/08/6ac7778fe85ece903f8b4581.html) is cast in stone.

****Politics:****

Much about [the death](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/07/maria-del-carmen-abascal-spain-housing-protests-dies) last week of Maricarmen, the lady who was evicted recently from her home in Madrid for – let us say – sound financial reasons. The owners, an investment fund, had been badgering her for seven years to pay up or ship out. The untimely event of her passing will clearly aid the left in the forthcoming elections. Vox has tried to [lay the blame](https://www.elplural.com/politica/espana/vox-derecha-radical-culpan-izquierda-muerte-maricarmen-enhorabuena-acampados_800867102_amp) on her death on the left, but that’s nothing more than decorating a pig with lipstick.

‘Can Sánchez convince Spanish voters he is their best hope for fairer housing? The recent death of 87-year-old woman likely to focus attention on crisis in run-up to election at end of November’ says ****The Guardian**** [here](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/08/pedro-sanchez-spanish-voters-housing-crisis-analysis). ‘…With more than 42% of Spaniards identifying access to housing as their main worry and with rents having risen by 80% over the past decade, the most pertinent question may be: why has it taken the eviction of an octogenarian and the accompanying protests to shake Spain’s political class into action?’

It continues with: ‘…the emergency measures, which have been redrafted into two new decrees after their defeat in parliament last week. These 21 measures include facilitating renting or buying a new home; extending eviction protections for vulnerable residents; prohibiting speculative real estate purchases and granting tax breaks to property owners and tenants who pay on time. “These are measures that, if I may say so, are a matter of simple common sense; a matter of humanity,” the prime minister said last week. “They unite small property owners and tenants while standing up to vulture funds, precisely because they target only those who view housing merely as a commodity for speculation.”’.

From ****Euronews**** [here](https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/10/spanish-pm-sanchez-launches-campaign-with-housing-as-key-theme): ‘Sánchez launches campaign with housing as key theme’.

From ****Infobae**** [here](https://www.infobae.com/espana/2026/10/10/el-pp-arranca-en-madrid-la-precampana-para-las-elecciones-generales-del-29-de-noviembre-con-la-promesa-de-feijoo-de-ser-el-presidente-que-espana-esta-esperando/?outputType=amp-type): ‘Feijóo is “the president Spain is waiting for”’.

****The Economist**** [here](https://www.economist.com/interactive/2026-spain-election-tracker) introduces the different parties and sums up the alternatives.

The *CIS* – Spain’s leading pollster – gives the PSOE the lead over the PP. From****20Minutos**** [here](https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/cis-tezanos-dispara-psoe-vox-tras-los-decretos-vivienda-adelanto-electoral-mientras-situa-pp-minimos_7048629_0.html). Most other available polls appear to favour the PP/Vox.

Let’s not make a song and dance out of it – from ****20Minutos**** [here](https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/feijoo-traslada-pesame-familia-maricarmen-pide-no-hacer-campana-con-su-muerte_7046305_0.html): ‘The PP leader has called for the death of Maricarmen to be kept out of the campaign for the November 29 general election. "No campaigning, no political parties, no self-serving exploitation. No more stones thrown at the wall," he wrote in his message on *X*. Feijóo concluded his post by stating that "in the face of a person's death, there is room only for respect," thereby demanding that the passing of the evicted woman be kept out of the political fray’. Sad to report, one PP councillor from Benalmádena (Málaga) evidently [didn’t get the message](https://www.eldiario.es/andalucia/malaga/concejal-vivienda-benalmadena-pp-carga-maricarmen-califica-puta-sinverguenza_1_13570425.html) on time.

‘The PP will contrast its proposals with the scandals that have marked Sánchez's recent years in office during an election campaign expected to be "very dirty." The PP's campaign will rest on three fundamental pillars: housing and the economy, Ceuta, and a focus on the corruption cases that have surrounded the administration throughout the legislative term’. Item from ****20Minutos**** [here](https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/pp-contrapondra-sus-propuestas-con-los-ultimos-anos-escandalos-sanchez-una-campana-electoral-que-preve-muy-sucia_7046763_0.html). We read: ‘…Beyond the issue of housing, the PP takes it for granted that the campaign will be particularly acrimonious. Various voices within the party predict it will be "very tough, underhanded, petty, and ugly"—a view shared by Feijóo himself, who has ordered his ranks to prepare for a counterattack and remain on guard against the "traps" he believes the Left will deploy’.

‘Feijóo promises "a government that will call for sacrifices," and social media responds: "For whom? Cuts to healthcare? Education?"’. Since the PP won’t be able to govern without Vox, the chances are cuts to both healthcare *and* education. The story is at ****Público**** [here](https://www.publico.es/tremending/feijoo-promete-gobierno-pedira-sacrificios-redes-le-responden-recortes-sanidad-educacion.html).

An obscure fascist party called Iusticia Europa (find them [here](https://iustitiaeuropa.es/quienes-somos/)) asks the Supreme Court to suspend the November 29 elections until it is clarified who is eligible to vote under the *'Ley de Nietos’*, the Grandchildren's Law. ****20Minutos**** has [the story](https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/iustitia-europa-pide-supremo-suspender-las-elecciones-29n-hasta-que-se-aclare-quien-puede-votar-con-ley-nietos_7047031_0.html).

Its candidate appears to be the one-time mayoress of Barcelona Ada Colau. Or [maybe not](https://www.eldiario.es/catalunya/colau-abre-no-candidata-frente-amplio-pacten-si-hay-persona-consenso-adelante_1_13583444.html). Gabriel Rufián to remain finally with ERC. As to who will be in what splinter, or far-left coalition, they only have until Friday midnight to [make up their minds](https://www.20minutos.es/nacional/negativa-podemos-integrarse-frente-amplio-condiciona-posible-union-acuerdos-circunscripciones-concretas_7048279_0.html) (and then, presumably, ours).

From ****Investing.com**** [here](https://www.investing.com/news/economy-news/spanish-lawyer-gonzalezdurantez-launches-centrist-party-for-november-election-4942110): ‘Lawyer Miriam González Durántez launched a new Spanish political party on Saturday to run in an early general election on November 29, promising to rise above a growing ideological divide, recover democratic values and depoliticise institutions. González Durántez, who is married to former British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and specialises in international and EU trade law, said the party, called Democracy21, will run in the election in Madrid and Barcelona’ (*Thanks to Marcus*)

A 24-hour general strike over the housing issue has [now been agreed](https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/spanish-unions-call-general-strike-november-11-weeks-before-snap-election-2026-10-07/) for Wednesday November 11th, with the backing of the main unions (and against efforts to stop it through the judiciary). It will be that rarest of strikes, a protest carried against the opposition.

****El Plural**** [here](https://www.elplural.com/politica/espana/lobby-israeli-lanza-hacer-campana-pp-vox-negando-genocidio-palestina_800759102): ‘The Israeli lobby *Acción y Comunicación sobre Oriente Medio* (ACOM) launches a campaign for the PP and Vox while denying the genocide in Palestine. Overlapping economic interests and the defence of genocide unite the far-right parties and Zionist capital’. From ****The Jerusalem Post**** [here](https://www.jpost.com/international/article-911056): ‘Spain must reverse Sánchez's anti-Israel policies after snap election, Vox lawmaker says. Vox MEP Juan Carlos Girauta calls for a “180-degree” foreign policy shift as the November 29 vote opens a campaign shaped by housing, corruption cases, Catalonia, migration, and Israel’.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo is warning that the postal vote might be rigged. From ****Xataca**** [here](https://www.xataka.com/magnet/amenaza-fraude-voto-correo-se-ha-convertido-obsesion-29-n-realidad-que-muy-dificil-que-ocurra): ‘It is practically impossible to rig elections via mail-in voting in Spain. Feijóo: "I trust the mail carriers. I trust the public employees at *Correos*. I do not trust its executives."’.

“The mail-in voting hoax stems from a fear of losing” and “Aznar should rest easy”: key quotes from the interview with Pedro Sánchez at****elDiario.es**** [here](https://www.eldiario.es/politica/frases-entrevista-pedro-sanchez-bulo-voto-correo-miedo-perder_1_13570028.html).

‘The liberal think tank *Institut Ostrom* warns about Vox's promises: "We've crunched the numbers, and it's misleading."’. From ****Marca**** [here](https://www.marca.com/tiramillas/politica/2026/10/11/think-tank-liberal-institut-ostrom-advierte-sobre-promesas-vox-hemos-hecho-cuentas-tramposo.html): Following their proposed tax, *IVA* and other cuts in public revenue, ‘…to finance the remaining more than €100,000 million without resorting to borrowing, the State would be forced to cut an amount equivalent to half of pension spending, the entire public healthcare budget, or a sum exceeding the total cost of public education’.

On Monday we learned that ‘The Supreme Court [upholds the suspension](https://www.eldiario.es/politica/supremo-mantiene-suspension-derecho-voto-nacionalizados-ley-nietos_1_13562559.html) of voting rights for those naturalized under the "Grandchildren's Law." The magistrates have rejected the State Attorney's Office's appeal to lift the precautionary measures, maintaining the suspension just a month and a half before the elections’. There’s one last chance for a late appeal, but we have here a remarkable case of some Spaniards not being able to vote (mind you, the same thing [happened to us Brits](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/apr/28/british-expats-lose-legal-battle-right-to-vote-eu-referendum) living in the EU during the notorious Brexit referendum). The PP and Vox [are pleased](https://www.vozpopuli.com/espana/vox-celebra-el-fallo-del-supremo-por-la-ley-de-nietos-y-el-psoe-carga-contra-feijoo-y-abascal-por-la-suspension-del-voto-de-los-nacionalizados.html) by this piece of judicial chicanery.

We often see claims that foreign residents – especially those immigrants given papers to work here – can vote in the general elections. They of course cannot. ****Maldita**** has [the story](https://maldita.es/malditateexplica/20261006/inmigrante-no-votar-elecciones-generales/): ‘Migrants with legal status in Spain who come from countries outside the European Union may only participate in municipal elections, provided there are reciprocal electoral agreements with their countries of origin, and they meet the minimum residency requirements applicable in each case. As of October 6, 2026, the countries with which Spain has agreements in force are Norway, Ecuador, New Zealand, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Iceland, Bolivia, Cape Verde, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and Trinidad and Tobago. If these migrants obtain Spanish nationality—a process requiring minimum periods of legal residence in Spain—they may then participate in general and regional elections, as well as European elections, provided they are of legal age…’

****Catalonia:****

Why did Gabriel Rufián go with (continue with) ERC rather than leading the national far-left Frente Amplio? Because, says Àlex López on *Facebook* [here](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10244893203015934&set=a.1532839052007&type=3&rdid=8j57vHL36dh6yld5&share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F1Jpd3m3pLV%2F), there are 48 Catalonian seats in the Spanish parliament. The fear is that the far-right in Catalonia could swamp the far-left as Aliança Catalana is not running and their voters will go with Junts per Catalunya. (*Gracias Maite*)

****Europe:****

From ****El Huff Post**** [here](https://www.huffingtonpost.es/global/el-ordago-superviviente-que-batalla-sanchez-contener-respiracion-europa-f202610.html): ‘The survivor’s high-stakes gamble: why Sánchez’s battle has Europe holding its breath. By calling early elections for November 29, the Spanish Prime Minister kicks off a major election year, with France and Italy still to come. The future weight of social democracy on the continent—and the most clear-cut opposition to Trumpism—hinges on his victory or defeat’. There are also elections in Israel (27 October) and the USA midterms (3 November) coming up.

****Media:****

‘Half of Spain will mourn Maricarmen and pledge to honour her memory. There will be calls to name a square or street after her, and her name will be shouted at protests demanding a housing policy that does not exclude the majority of the population. Half of Spain. Only half. The other half will rack its brains to craft a narrative portraying her as a freeloader unworthy of any sympathy. They will find ways to tarnish her memory and belittle her. They will try to keep her name out of the conversation, in the futile hope that we will forget her. Today, she stands as a symbol against the voracity of the real estate market." The 87-year-old woman died after being evicted, yet she has become a symbol against real estate speculation’.

Mark Stücklin from ****Spanish Property Insight**** [says](https://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com/2026/10/10/radical-housing-decrees-return-as-housing-becomes-election-battleground) ‘…Sánchez now appears determined to fight the election on housing, but not on his government’s record or the underlying causes of the crisis. Instead, he wants to frame it as a simple moral choice between ordinary people, whom he claims to defend, and property speculators or “vulture funds”, supposedly protected by his political opponents. A *tweet* by his Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez sums it up nicely. “Either with the people, or with the vultures” she says…’

The article continues: ‘Whoever wins the election, Spain’s housing crisis will not be solved overnight. It will take at least five years, probably longer, of sustained reform to increase supply where people want to live. That means freeing up land, simplifying planning and building regulations, making better use of urban space, investing in transport and utility infrastructure, and deregulating the rental market to encourage private landlords to supply and maintain more homes.’

‘Right-wing forces are dusting off the chainsaw and preparing to slash pensions and public services.
